How much of your day is typing, not coding?

Prompts, PR descriptions, Slack threads. None of it is code, and all of it goes through your keyboard at about 60 words a minute. Put in a rough day and see what it adds up to over a year.

The working

How the number is worked out.

Four lines of arithmetic. Nothing you enter leaves your browser.

  • Words a year

For each row, messages a day times words in each, added up, times your working days.

  • Typing time

Words a year divided by your typing speed. 60 wpm is an above-average typing-test score, and people compose prose slower than they copy text, so the default flatters the keyboard.

  • Speaking time

The same words at 150 wpm, a normal conversational pace. It doesn't count pauses, so treat it as a best case.

  • Working weeks

    Hours divided by 40.
